IN THE HOUSE
REST IN POWER REV. CECIL WILLIAMS
|
We at Hospitality House mourn yesterday's passing of the Reverend Cecil Williams, co-founder and pastor of Glide Memorial Methodist Church, Minister of Liberation, and mentor and spiritual leader for multiple generations of social justice warriors. Reverend Williams leaves an enduring legacy of achievements, and will be remembered forever as an unflinching champion for the poor and marginalized, and an outspoken champion for LGBTQ rights. Reverend Williams' unwavering voice helped move an entire institution - and so many of us - in a better direction. Toward justice. Toward equality. Toward liberation.
Hospitality House owes its existence to Reverend Williams' leadership, having sprung from the creativity of a group of LGBT activists known as the Vanguard group - sponsored by Glide Memorial Church. In Spring 1967, Vanguard activists helped create a simple drop in space on Eddy Street, for young people and others seeking acceptance in the City of St. Francis. Nearly 60 years later, Hospitality House still proudly calls the Tenderloin its home. Just a few blocks from Glide Memorial Church. Never far away from the watchful gaze and warm embrace of Reverend Cecil Williams. Champion. Truth-Teller. Warrior for the ages. Hospitality House extends its deepest condolences to Reverend William's friends, family, and global community. Hospitality House remains forever grateful to Reverend Cecil Williams and Glide Memorial Methodist Church. For teaching us the meaning of social justice. Of liberation. Rest in Power, Reverend Cecil Williams. |

STORIES FROM THE FIELD
MEET MAY CHAPPELL
|
May Chappell first discovered Hospitality House after having been homeless, and recovering from a debilitating back injury. While walking through the Tenderloin, searching for places that could help, May bumped into John Ellison, a HH staff member who used to work at another shelter. John encouraged May to try Hospitality House. “Ever since then, I’ve been hooked on Hospitality House,” May says.
