March 10, 2020
Dear Friends & Supporters of Hospitality House’s Community Arts Program,
We regret to announce, after extensive discussion with our key community partners, we have decided to cancel THHE Auction 2020, scheduled for Thursday, May 14 at the historic Phoenix Hotel, in the heart of San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood.
The Annual Art Auction – renamed THHE Auction – has been Hospitality House’s signature fundraising gala for thirty-five years, a citywide celebration of talented and aspiring community artists. Last year’s event attracted nearly 600 enthusiastic arts supporters from across the City and beyond – a remarkable evening of community, camaraderie, and celebration.
The recent outbreak of the coronavirus – COVID19 – has resulted in a growing public health crisis around the globe. Efforts to reduce public exposure are underway throughout the country, as communities from coast to coast have increasingly postponed gatherings, events, business conferences at various public venues. We needed to act quickly and responsibly to ensure that sponsors, partners, attendees – and ultimately, our community of artists – were not exposed to undue risk or potential harm.
Despite the cancellation – we prefer ‘extended postponement’ - of this year’s event, we are considering alternative ways to recognize the hard work that many artists have committed to this year’s event. Dozens of artists have already submitted exciting and stunning art works. We will recognize their hard work in some way – smaller perhaps, but still meaningful – to show our gratitude and appreciation.
In the days and weeks ahead, we’ll reach out to Hospitality House’s extended arts community with an opportunity to support aspiring community artists.
Thank you all for your understanding, and your commitment to supporting the arts. Ours is a community steeped in tradition, in vibrancy, in diversity – all brought forth in the rich landscape of imagination, through the arts.
And don’t forget to mark your calendars - we’ll see you at THHE Auction 2021!
With gratitude,
Joseph T. Wilson
